Movie of the Week
Movie of the Week
Mark Kermode picks his favourite film of those released that week. A running gag during 2006-7 was that Mark would leave this until the last minute of the programme and pick something he hadn't yet mentioned - indeed, it it was a listener's frustration with this that partially led to the name "Wittertainment" being coined; said listener, Tony, writing in to say "you'll get through all the reviews if you don't witter".
Occasionally the Movie of the Week is a film that Mark has not had time to actually review within the broadcast show (and is only included in the Podcast extra), as the film is a of an indie bent and / or is on a very limited release. It has often been the case that Simon Mayo has pleaded with Mark to make Movie of the Week something mainstream and that listeners have a realistic possibility of seeing, though Mark always refuses. Examples have included him picking Bug over Lions For Lambs, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days over Charlie Wilson's War, and Hard Candy over Thank You For Smoking.
Only two films have had the distinction of being named Movie of the Week twice - Pan's Labyrinth and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. And the Charlie And The Chocolate Factory endorsement came from James King, so doesn't really count.
