The House Bunny
The House Bunny
"Is it funny? No. Is it subversive? No. Did I laugh? No. Will it be number one? Most likely" - Mark Kermode, BBC Radio 5live
Mark predicted that on release in October 2008, The House Bunny - a comedy funded by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner about a woman kicked out of the Playboy Mansion for being too old - would be top of the Box Office Top 10 as "no-one ever went broke underestimating the stupidity of the public." He was of course right, and the next week's show began with the declaration "move over Mystic Meg."
After the kicking Mark gave to Burn After Reading, Jack Blackburn wrote a (heavily interrupted) email to say that while the film was not one of the Coen Brothers' best, it was better than The House Bunny. Mark pointed out that the difference was that the Coens would go back to making great films, while the creators of The House Bunny would go back to being pond life.
