Tagline

Taglines are the short phrases used on film posters to hook people's interest in seeing the film. Occasionally they go on to become some of the most famed phrases in the English language - like "In space, no-one can hear you scream" from Alien, or "This time it's personal" from Jaws: The Revenge.

The one Mark likes a lot is from a fictional movie in Earnest Saves Christmas, for a festive-set slasher flick called Christmas Slay - "He knows if you've been bad or good - and he's got an axe." Other pleasing horror taglined have included "Say aargh" (The Dentist); "You know the drill" (The Dentist

2); "You brought them into this world; they'll take you out of it" (The Children) and "When it comes to horror, they're in a field of their own" (The Scarecrows).

Both the Good Doctors also like the one for Jack Frost - "Snow dad's better than no dad."

Simon - and a number of listeners, who wrote in - believes that the least scary tagline is "what happens when the numbers run out" from Knowing. Mark reckons that the worst tagline he had heard was "Between the worlds of the living and the dead is a place you're not supposed to stay" for Stay.

Of course, by the time you get down to the level of "Titans Will Clash" (from Clash Of The Titans) there really is no saving things.

The Film Review Show once had a feature in which listeners could suggest their own taglines for films, inspired by one listener who, while trying to nominate The Da Vinci Code as a film which had no redeeming qualities whatsoever, ironically gave the film a redeeming quality because their joke tagline of "I know what you did last supper" was so good. Later taglines submitted included:

• "He's back, and this time it's Percival" - King Arthur
• "Whitney Houston, we have a problem" - The Bodyguard
• "Night of the living bread" - Children Of The Corn
• "In lace, no-one can hear you scheme" - Elizabeth

The programme's own tagline, of course, is "Wittertainment at its most wittertaining", though a shoutout must go to "tinkerty tonk old fruit, and down with the Nazis."
