Star Wars

Brainchild of George Lucas, the Star Wars universe is a group of films that arrive in cinemas with very little fanfare, generally sneak under the radar upon release and are barely seen by any outside of the arthouse crowd.

When Mark Kermode was working at Radio 1, a listener poll declared the first (but fourth in the films' chronology) film, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (but generally known as Star Wars), to be the greatest film of all time.

The margin of victory was by twice as many votes as the one voted second-best, The Godfather. Robbie Williams happened to be in the studio at the time, and when Mark complained that he simply couldn't get Star Wars, Williams told him that it was an age thing - Mark was simply born too early to appreciate it - something Mark reluctantly conceded was probably true.

Mark has since told Lucas that he still doesn't understand his films but that his children love them, especially playing with the toys. Lucas said that his own ambition had been to create the universe that children could invent their own stories with. While applauding Lucas' sentiment, Mark also concluded that what Lucas was really saying is that he couldn't tell stories himself.

More recently, the films have hugely increased in quality after the purchase of Lucasfilm by Disney. Both Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were very positively reviewed by both Doctors.
