Poltergeist rule
When everyone knows who the producer is but no-one recognises the director's name. Named after the 1982 film Poltergeist, which was produced (and written) by Steven Spielberg but actually directed by Tobe Hooper, as Spielberg had signed a contract preventing him from directing another film until he had finished ET: The Extra Terrestrial. Nevertheless it was Spielberg's name that was all over the advertising for the movie.
Other films that have been marketed in similar ways have included:
- Cloverfield - produced by JJ Abrams; actual director Matt Reeves
- District 9 - produced by Peter Jackson; actual director Neill Blomkamp
- El Orfanato - produced by Guillermo del Toro; actual director Juan Antonio Baiona
