# Poltergeist rule

When everyone knows who the producer is but no-one recognises the director's name. Named after the 1982 film Poltergeist, which was produced (and written) by [Steven Spielberg](Steven_Spielberg) but actually directed by Tobe Hooper, as Spielberg had signed a contract preventing him from directing another film until he had finished [ET: The Extra Terrestrial](ET:_The_Extra_Terrestrial). Nevertheless it was Spielberg's name that was all over the advertising for the movie.

Other films that have been marketed in similar ways have included:

* Cloverfield - produced by JJ Abrams; actual director Matt Reeves
* District 9 - produced by Peter Jackson; actual director Neill Blomkamp
* [El Orfanato](El_Orfanato) \- produced by Guillermo del Toro; actual director Juan Antonio Baiona
