"A fantastic film. It is near-as-dammit flawless" - _Mark Kermode, BBC Radio 5 Live_
However low [Adam Sandler](Adam_Sandler) sinks - and with [Jack And Jill](/web/20221004005616/https://witterpedia.net/wiki/index.php?title=Jack%5FAnd%5FJill&action=edit&redlink=1 "Jack And Jill (page does not exist)"), Grown-Ups and [That's My Boy](/web/20221004005616/https://witterpedia.net/wiki/index.php?title=That%27s%5FMy%5FBoy&action=edit&redlink=1 "That's My Boy (page does not exist)") in recent memory, that's pretty low - [Mark Kermode](Mark_Kermode) can never write him off completely, because he was just so good in Punch-Drunk Love.
As Mark points out, it's a film about love in which love story in which the most romantic thing anyone says to anyone is, "you're so beautiful, I just want to smash your face with a hammer."
The film's director, [Paul Thomas Anderson](Paul_Thomas_Anderson), took five years to follow it up, but when he did so, it was with the masterpiece [There / Will / Be / Blood](There_/_Will_/_Be_/_Blood). Strangely enough, however, it seems that he didn't consider Sandler for the role of Daniel Plainview.
