The chapeau of choice for the discerning Wittertainee is a Scandinavian fisherman's cap, as worn by legendary folk singer Tom Paxton, with a large "W" on the front of it.

Other hat styles that have been considered but that didn't make the grade are:

• Baseball cap - Can make you look like William Hague, even a George Town one.
• Pork Pie Hat - A la Popeye Doyle from The French Connection. Restricts Quiffage and is thus undesirable.
• Knitted caps - Particularly those in the style of Kevin Rowland from Dexys Midnight Runners. These don't look great when hanging around Birmingham New Street Station apparently.
• Top hat - Not ideal for those seated behind you in the cinema (this excludes the collapsible silk opera hat)
