Singer and actor who played the Devil in Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus, in which Mark was particularly taken with the line "I'm guessing you're not a betting man", repeating it for many Box Office Top 10 countdowns afterwards.

The bit when Waits' song Underground appears in Robots was so scary that Simon had to leave the film when he went to see it with a four-year-old Child 1.

Waits then returned to terrify said child again after Simon took him to see Polar Express, thinking "I've read the book and there's nothing scary in it."

An interview with Waits from 1979 was seemingly the inspiration for Heath Ledger's turn as the Joker in The Dark Knight.
