The Mist

Arguably the bleakest ending in movie history. Simon Mayo asked if that meant that everybody dies, but Mark Kermode explained that it wasn't that, it was even worse.

The ending is even bleaker than that of the Stephen King source novella. The film's director, Frank Darabont, was actually offered twice as much money by the studio to make it with a happier ending, but Darabont refused. Mark was full of admiration for Darabont for sticking to his guns like that.

The review (which incidentally took place at Wimbledon, and featured a cameo from Jeff Tarango blowing his nose) prompted much listener correspondence on when one might actually feel in the mood to take in a film that had such an ending. Mark explained that he is always in that type of mood anyway.
