Remade in American

Mark Kermode has an ongoing frustration with the fact that excellent films from countries outside of the English-speaking world are continually being remade, to universally detrimental effect, by US studio executives. When awarding Best Film Not In The English Language at the 2011 Baftas, he commented:

"This award honours movies which take us deep within another culture, movies from around the world which can be understood by anyone thanks to the universal language of cinema and the miracle of subtitles - but which Hollywood will nevertheless feel the need to remake in English."

The film that Mark subsequently awarded the Bafta to was Män Som Hatar Kvinnor (Men Who Hate Women) - which was at that very moment being remade as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by David Fincher, who was therefore unable to collect his own Bafta for Best Director for Forrest Gump with A-levels, something Mark found "poetic."
