Lab closure rule

Mark Kermode's rule, coined as a result of Journey To The Center Of The Earth, that all scientists in movies begin the film under threat of having their lab closed (or at very least their funding cut) - as is the case for Brendan Pasta Boy Fraser in said Jules Verne 3D fun.
