Joel Schumacher
Joel Schumacher
Director who made his name in the 1980s with films like Flatliners and The Lost Boys. Mark Kermode dismissed Schumacher's work as entirely backlighting, big hair and blowy shirts, until he made Falling Down in 1992 - at which point Mark's entire opinion changed.
Mark remains pretty much the only flagwaver for Schumacher's Batman And Robin - although Empire magazine gave it three stars at the time, they later admitted this was a mistake. Even George Clooney, who played Batman in the film, has given people who saw it their money back.
The Number 23 was, apparently, Schumacher's 23rd project. Simon and Mark both expressed doubt as to whether this was true, with Mark adding, "If we're going to play that game, Schumacher means "shoemaker". And shoemakers are cobblers. And listeners are invited to insert a cheap joke here."
