Basil Exposition

A character from the Austin Powers movies (played by Michael York), whose main role is to act as a device to provide the audience with the background to the film's plot. When such a character appears in a film unironically, it is often a sign of clumsy writing.

Basil has a more academically-minded cousin, Doktor von Plot Explanation, who turns up in monster movies.
