The Abyss

"He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." - Friedrich Nietzsche

Mark enjoys films which invite the audience to stare into the abyss. It means he gets to use this quote, which makes him happy. Sometimes he is especially pleased because the film in question is by Werner Herzog, which means he gets to say the line in his best German accent. It is often accompanied by a quote from Herzog's film Grizzly Man, in which the Bavarian director insists that the essence of human experience of this world is "Chaos, disharmony, and murder"

Mark likes staring into the Abyss. When asked to comment, the Abyss said "Oh bloody hell. Not Kermode again. Can't get any privacy around here."

When Werner Herzog stares into the Abyss, the Abyss runs away, hides under its bed and whimpers.

Also the title of a superb underwater James Cameron movie from 1989.
